UNDERSTANDING TRAUMA

What is trauma?

Trauma can happen after a single overwhelming event or after repeated experiences over time. It may involve direct experiences, witnessing trauma, learning about trauma affecting someone close to you, or repeated exposure through work or caring roles.

Single incident trauma

Trauma linked to one distressing event, such as an accident, assault, natural disaster, or sudden loss.

Complex trauma

Trauma that happens repeatedly or over time, often in relationships or environments where safety was limited.

Post-traumatic stress

Symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance, anxiety, hypervigilance, or feeling constantly on edge.

Trauma reminders

Certain places, sounds, smells, people, conversations, or situations may trigger strong emotional or physical reactions.

Therapy can also support
anxiety, depression, sleep issues, shame, guilt, avoidance, relationship difficulties, emotional regulation, and feeling safer in daily life.
