Depression is more than just feeling sad
Depression can affect your energy, motivation, sleep, appetite, relationships,
self-esteem, work, and ability to enjoy things.
At Reimagine Psychology, we help you understand how depression is affecting you and build
practical, evidence-based strategies for support, recovery, and daily life.
How a Depression Psychologist Can Help
Talking about depression can feel difficult, particularly if you’re worried about being judged, misunderstood or feeling like a burden. A depression psychologist provides a safe and confidential space where you can talk openly about what you’re experiencing.
Identify triggers and patterns
Build awareness of what may be contributing to your depression and how you currently cope.
Challenge unhelpful patterns
Explore thoughts, beliefs and behaviours that may be keeping you feeling stuck.
Build practical skills
Develop strategies to support your mood, motivation, emotional wellbeing and everyday functioning.
Navigate contributing factors
Work through life circumstances, relationships, stress, trauma or other factors that may be affecting you.
Depending on your needs, treatment may draw on evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Understanding Depression
Depression can affect your energy, motivation, sleep, appetite, concentration, relationships and self-esteem. It can also make everyday tasks feel much harder than they used to. While difficult life experiences can contribute to depression, it can also develop without one obvious cause.
According to the 2020–2022 National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing, around 1 in 6 Australians had experienced a mood disorder, such as depression, at some point in their lives. 1.5 million people experienced symptoms over 12 months in Australia.
Given that depression is one of the most common mental disorders, it is important to understand the signs and symptoms. This can look different for everyone as we each have our own experiences and ways of coping. Understanding what’s happening is often the first step towards finding support that works for you.
Signs and Symptoms of
Depression
Depression doesn’t look the same for everyone. Some people may experience obvious changes in their mood and behaviour, while others may continue appearing to function normally while struggling internally. Symptoms can also vary in frequency, intensity and duration.
Common signs and symptoms of depression can include:
Feeling sad, low or down for an extended period
Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
Feeling overwhelmed, stuck or unable to keep up with everyday life
Struggling to make everyday decisions
Feelings of hopelessness, numbness or low self-worth
Changes in appetite or eating habits
Losing interest in hobbies, relationships or activities you once enjoyed
Withdrawing from friends, family or social activities
Feeling constantly tired or lacking energy, even after sleeping
Feeling increasingly negative about yourself or the future
Strong feelings of guilt, worthlessness or self-blame
Having thoughts about death or suicide
You don’t need to experience every symptom to seek support. If these changes are affecting your everyday life, relationships or wellbeing, talking with a psychologist can help you understand what’s happening and what support may be helpful.

FAQs

Do you treat postnatal depression?
Yes. Our psychologists can provide support for people experiencing postnatal depression, including low mood, anxiety, overwhelm, loss of enjoyment, guilt, difficulty connecting with your baby or feeling unlike yourself after having a child. Treatment is tailored to your individual circumstances and may focus on emotional wellbeing, coping strategies, relationships, adjustment to parenthood, and other factors contributing to how you’re feeling. If you’re experiencing symptoms of postnatal depression, reaching out for professional support can be an important first step.
How is depression different from just feeling sad?
Feeling sad is a normal part of life, particularly when we experience loss, disappointment or difficult circumstances. Depression is different because symptoms tend to be more persistent and can affect many areas of your life, including your motivation, energy, sleep, appetite, relationships, concentration, and enjoyment. You may also experience hopelessness, numbness, or low self-worth. Depression doesn’t always have an obvious cause, and you don’t need to wait until your symptoms feel severe before seeking support.
How long does depression treatment take to show results?
There isn’t one set timeframe for depression treatment because everyone’s experience is different. Some people notice improvements relatively early, while others may need longer-term support, particularly when depression has been present for a long time or is connected with other challenges. Your psychologist will work with you to regularly review how you’re going and adjust your treatment as needed. The aim isn’t simply to feel better temporarily, but to develop sustainable strategies that support your wellbeing over time.
Can I get a Medicare rebate for depression treatment?
You may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for psychology sessions if you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan or another eligible referral pathway. A GP can assess whether this is appropriate for you and provide the relevant referral. You don’t need a GP referral to see a psychologist at Reimagine Psychology if you’re paying privately. Medicare eligibility, rebates and session limits can change, so we recommend discussing your options with your GP or our team before booking.
