ANXIETY TREATMENT

Anxiety Psychologist
Melbourne

Anxiety is an uncomfortable yet very normal human reaction to stress and danger. However, when anxiety stays on for longer than it should, it can have significant impacts on quality of life. Anxiety disorders are common and can affect millions of Australians. When anxiety becomes constant and overwhelming or starts to get in the way of daily life, it can be a sign to reach out for support. Anxiety is treatable, and our experienced psychologists can help.

Anxiety is normal, but it should not control your life

Anxiety can affect your thoughts, body, emotions, decisions, relationships,
work, study, and everyday routines.

At Reimagine Psychology, we help you understand how anxiety shows up for you
and build practical strategies to manage it when it becomes overwhelming or gets in the way of life.

HOW WE CAN HELP

How an Anxiety Psychologist in Melbourne Can Help

A psychologist can help you understand anxiety and how to notice feelings of anxiety. The next step is to look at when anxiety might have a useful purpose (i.e. protecting us from potential threats) or when it might get in the way of us leading a meaningful and fulfilling life (e.g. wanting to throw up during a presentation).Together, we can help you understand and utilise different strategies to bring feelings of anxiety to a proportionate and manageable level.

One common approach to managing anxiety is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which explores the relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and helps us develop more helpful ways of responding to anxious thoughts. Another approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on accepting uncomfortable thoughts and feelings while building the skills to respond in ways that align with our values and what matters most.

These approaches can also be combined with relaxation and mindfulness strategies to help manage physical symptoms of anxiety and improve emotional regulation.

ANXIETY SUPPORT

Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is an emotion that we will all feel at various points in our lives. It’s our body’s way of telling us there might be a threat or something stressing us out. It’s a natural instinct to help us survive. However, anxiety can become problematic when it interferes with daily life.

This can show up in three ways:

Thought patterns

worrying about the worst-case scenario, thinking about how a situation will play out, excessive ‘planning’ in your mind as well as others.

Physical sensations

in their most extreme, can present as panic attacks but can also be a noticeable increase in heart rate, breathlessness, tension, feeling sick in the stomach, shakiness, or restlessness.

Behaviours

irritability, indecisiveness, and actively avoiding things that make you feel anxious; also known as a safety behaviour to get through an anxiety-inducing situation, e.g. needing a friend at a party to get through social interactions as a ‘safety net’.

In the latest mental health survey in Australia (2020–2022), about 3.4 million people had an anxiety disorder. That’s more than 1 in 6 Australians.

Everyone will experience anxiety differently. It’s important to learn how to understand what the anxiety is trying to tell us and learn how to manage it when it’s no longer helpful.

What's the difference between anxiety and health anxiety?

Anxiety is an umbrella term, generally used to describe excessive worry over various everyday issues. Health anxiety is more specific and is primarily concerned with the fear of having or developing a serious medical illness. Health anxiety often persists despite multiple health checks and negative screens. This constant fear triggers and maintains the fight-or-flight response, causing significant distress over a prolonged period of time. Our psychologists are well trained to help manage all types of anxiety.

Therapy is all about you, and it’s important that you have the right fit so that you feel comfortable sharing your experiences in the sessions. When looking for the right psychologist, consider whether they work with your specific concerns. Do you feel safe and supported? Do they listen to your concerns? Finally, do you think you will be able to work well with them?

It’s completely okay to take the time after your first session to decide if you want to book in again. It’s also okay to look for another psychologist because you feel there is a mismatch – we won’t be offended and can help recommend a better fit!

You don’t need a referral to see a psychologist for anxiety. However, having a referral from your GP or Psychiatrist under Medicare’s Better Access Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) will mean that you can claim up to 10 rebates in a calendar year when working with a psychologist. For more information on rebate amounts and out-of-pocket costs, please see our Fees & Rebates page.

This will vary from person to person depending on your individual situation and goals for therapy. In general, shorter periods of therapy may range from 6 – 12 sessions to address a specific stressor that has popped up for the first time.

Please let your psychologist know if you have any concerns about how many sessions you might need, and they will be able to give you a clearer estimate.
