Adult life with ADHD can feel like a never-ending loop

Missed deadlines, half-finished tasks, burnout, guilt,
and the feeling that everyone else got the rulebook and you didn’t.

Maybe you’re tired of hearing “just get started” for the 100th time.
We understand that ADHD is not a lack of effort — it is how your brain works.

ADHD SUPPORT

Understanding ADHD in Adults

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that begins in childhood and often continues into adulthood. While the signs may have always been there, they can be missed, masked or misunderstood along the way. Common symptoms of ADHD in adults include difficulty starting or completing tasks, forgetfulness, disorganisation, restlessness, impulsivity, emotional fluctuations and feeling easily overwhelmed.

There are three presentations of ADHD:

Predominantly inattentive

Adults with inattentive ADHD may struggle with focus, organisation and follow-through.

Predominantly hyperactive/impulsive

Hyperactive/impulsive ADHD may involve restlessness, impulsivity and difficulty slowing down.

Combined presentation

Combined ADHD involves symptoms of both.

ADHD can look different in adults than in children, but its impact on everyday life can be significant. Many adults seek an ADHD diagnosis after their child is diagnosed and begin recognising similar patterns in themselves.

How can ADHD therapy help adults?

No, you don’t. You don’t need to have all the answers before starting therapy. We can work with you to understand what you’re experiencing and how difficulties with focus, motivation, emotional regulation, organisation, time management, routines, relationships or everyday functioning may be impacting your life.

Our therapy is ADHD-informed and practical, so we can focus on the challenges you are experiencing now and develop strategies that work with the way your brain works, whether or not you have received a formal diagnosis.

If you’re unsure whether ADHD is part of the picture, therapy can also be a space to better understand yourself and explore what might be contributing to your difficulties. You don’t have to wait for a diagnosis to start getting support.

Yes. ADHD can affect much more than just attention. Many people with ADHD find that difficulties with executive functioning can make starting tasks, prioritising, managing time, staying organised, and following through feel much harder than they “should”.

ADHD support can help you understand why you might procrastinate, lose focus, struggle to get started, become overwhelmed by competing demands, or find motivation inconsistent. We can work together to develop practical strategies around task initiation, time management, planning, prioritising, focus, routines and emotional regulation.

We also look at the bigger picture, including work and study demands, burnout, perfectionism, overwhelm and the environments you’re working in. The goal isn’t to force you to work like everyone else; it is to find ways of working that are more compatible with your brain, your strengths and your life.

At Reimagine Psychology, ADHD support is about building practical tools while developing a better understanding of yourself, so you can feel more capable and in control of your day-to-day life.

No. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication. Our role is to provide psychological therapy, ADHD strategies, and ongoing emotional and practical support.

If medication is something you want to explore, you will need to speak with your GP or a Psychiatrist. Currently, you must obtain a prescription from a Psychiatrist to access ADHD medication in Victoria. This is changing soon, as 150 GPs across the state are allowed to undertake additional training to diagnose and prescribe. Please check with your GP before making an appointment.

Your psychologist will take time to understand your experiences, challenges, strengths, goals, and current supports. Together, you’ll explore how ADHD may be affecting different areas of your life and identify what you’d like to work on.

Sessions may include ADHD education and practical strategies for managing executive functioning, routines, motivation, and time management, as well as support with emotional regulation, self-esteem, stress, anxiety, and relationships.

Your psychologist will work collaboratively with you to develop strategies that fit your needs, strengths and everyday life.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Therapy is tailored to where you are now and the changes you’d like to make.
