ADHD SUPPORT

Understanding ADHD

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects attention, impulse control, and motivation. It begins in early childhood and can continue throughout a person’s life, although the way ADHD looks can change over time.

There are three types of ADHD:

Inattentive

difficulty managing attention, staying focused and organised, or keeping track of important details and belongings.

Hyperactive-impulsive

difficulty managing energy, feeling restless, needing to move or be productive, or acting or speaking without thinking.

Combined

a combination of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

ADHD can look very different from one person to another. Some children may be noticed at school because of hyperactivity, impulsivity, or emotional outbursts, while others may appear quiet, distracted, or forgetful. Adults may have developed masking or coping strategies over the years, meaning their ADHD is not always obvious to others.

Whether you’re seeking
ADHD support for adults,
ADHD support for children and teens,
or guidance as a parent, an ADHD psychologist can help you understand what’s happening and find practical strategies for everyday life.

ADHD ASSESSMENT

Getting an ADHD diagnosis?

Getting an ADHD diagnosis is about building a complete picture of your experiences rather than simply checking off a list of symptoms. At Reimagine Psychology, our ADHD assessment process considers your current symptoms, background, history, and how your experiences affect different areas of your life.

What you can expect at Reimagine Psychology

✓

Initial consultation & screening

Your first step is an initial consultation and screening process. Your psychologist will talk with you about your concerns and may use standardised questionnaires, such as the DIVA-5 or ASRS, to help assess ADHD symptoms.

✓

Clinical interviews & assessment tasks

Further clinical interviews and assessment tasks may then be used to explore your experiences in more detail. Where helpful, we may also ask for information from someone who knows you well, such as a parent, partner or close friend. This can help us build a fuller picture of how your symptoms have presented over time.

✓

Feedback & findings

Once the assessment is complete, your psychologist will talk you through the findings, answer your questions and discuss what support may be helpful moving forward.

✓

Ongoing support

An ADHD diagnosis isn't the end of the process. It can be the beginning of understanding yourself better, learning how your brain works and finding ways to build a life that works with your brain, rather than against it.

Can a psychologist diagnose ADHD?

Yes. A psychologist can assess and diagnose ADHD using clinical interviews, standardised questionnaires, background information and diagnostic criteria.

At Reimagine Psychology, we take the time to understand the bigger picture rather than relying on a single questionnaire or symptom. Your psychologist will consider your experiences, how symptoms have developed over time and how they affect different areas of your life. We may also gather information from someone who knows you well, particularly when assessing children.

The assessment process is designed to be thorough and to consider whether ADHD or other factors may help explain the difficulties you’re experiencing.

If an ADHD diagnosis is appropriate, your psychologist will explain the findings with you and discuss what support may be helpful next.

An ADHD assessment usually includes an initial consultation and screening, clinical interviews, standardised questionnaires and a review of your background and experiences.

Your psychologist will ask about your symptoms, how they affect your everyday life and how they may have presented throughout your development. Depending on your circumstances, it can also be helpful to have information from a parent, partner or another person who knows you well.

Once all the relevant information has been gathered, your psychologist will review the findings and provide feedback. You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions and understand what the results mean for you.

The goal is to build a clear picture of your experiences, strengths and support needs rather than simply focusing on difficulties.

The number of appointments can vary depending on your individual circumstances and whether you are being assessed as an adult or child.

The process generally involves an initial screening appointment, followed by clinical interviews and assessment tasks if a full assessment is appropriate. Your psychologist will then review the information and meet with you for a feedback session to discuss the findings and next steps.

We understand that assessment can feel like a big step. Your psychologist will explain each stage of the process so you know what to expect and have the opportunity to ask questions along the way.

After the assessment, you can also choose to continue working with your psychologist for ongoing ADHD support.

Yes. Following the assessment process, your psychologist will prepare a clinical report summarising the assessment findings, diagnostic outcome and recommendations.

A report can give you a clearer understanding of your ADHD profile and the types of support that may be useful. Depending on your circumstances, it may also help when talking with your GP, psychiatrist, school, university or workplace about appropriate support.

Your psychologist will talk you through the findings and recommendations so you’re not left trying to interpret the report on your own.

Psychologists can assess and diagnose ADHD and provide psychological treatment and support, but they cannot prescribe ADHD medication.

If medication is something you would like to explore, you will need to speak with a medical professional such as a GP or psychiatrist. Medication and psychological support can sometimes be used alongside one another, depending on your individual needs.

Your psychologist can continue to support you with the psychological and practical aspects of living with ADHD, including strategies for attention, motivation, emotional regulation, routines, time management, work or study and relationships.
