ADHD SUPPORT

Understanding ADHD in Children

Maybe your child is bright and curious, but often forgets instructions, struggles to get started, gets easily overwhelmed, or seems to have a million things happening at once. Or perhaps they’re constantly on the go, act before thinking, or find big emotions difficult to manage. ADHD can look different for every child. It can affect attention, organisation, energy, emotions and everyday life, and sometimes the signs can be easy to miss.

There are three presentations of ADHD:

Inattentive

Often daydreaming, forgetful, easily distracted, or finding it hard to get things done.

Hyperactive-impulsive

Often restless, constantly moving, acting quickly, or finding it hard to pause and think.

Combined

A mix of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive traits.

Understanding your child’s unique way of thinking and learning can be the first step towards helping them feel understood, supported, and confident.

How can ADHD therapy support teenagers?

The teenage years come with plenty of changes, and ADHD can make some of them feel even harder. Therapy can help teenagers better understand how their ADHD affects school, motivation, emotions, confidence, friendships, family relationships, and everyday responsibilities.

Rather than simply focusing on “fixing” ADHD symptoms, we work with teenagers to understand how their brain works and develop strategies that fit their strengths and interests.

Often, yes, but it depends on the teenager and what they need. Parent or carer involvement can be really helpful in supporting changes outside of the therapy room, particularly around routines, school, emotional regulation, communication and family life.

However, we want to work towards them learning how to identify and ask for help that they need rather than to passively waiting to receive help.

We work with teenagers to find the right balance between independence and family support. This might mean checking in with parents at times, sharing practical strategies, or working together on specific goals.

The level of involvement will depend on your teenager’s age, needs, comfort, and therapy goals. We want young people to have a safe space where they feel heard, while also helping parents feel informed and confident in supporting them at home.

No. Your teen does not need a formal ADHD diagnosis to begin support. Therapy can still help if your teen has been diagnosed, is waiting for an assessment, or is showing ADHD-related challenges with focus, motivation, emotions, or school.

Yes. ADHD can affect much more than attention. For many teenagers, it can make schoolwork, motivation, procrastination, organisation, and managing emotions feel much harder than they seem for others.

Therapy can help teenagers understand what gets in the way and develop practical strategies that actually fit their everyday life. This might include building study routines, managing time and deadlines, getting started on tasks, handling stress and overwhelm, regulating emotions, and building confidence and self-esteem.

We also help teenagers understand that struggling with motivation or organisation isn’t about being lazy or not trying hard enough. Together, we focus on finding approaches that work with their brain, strengths and individual needs.

No. Psychologists cannot prescribe ADHD medication. Medication questions need to be discussed with a GP, paediatrician, or psychiatrist. Our psychologists can provide ADHD-informed therapy, support, and practical strategies.
